Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was desperately poor and near starvation when he began painting in his native Holland. He went to Paris where the bright warm colours and broken brush strokes of the Impressionists burst upon him; but Parisian artistic life was not for van Gogh. In his ten years of supreme creative energy, van Gogh attempted a totality of human experience. In colour, he defined his relationship to nature; his indispensable ingredient.
