Margel Hinder is no doubt one of the most important and dynamic, yet underrated, Australian sculptors of the 20th century. Her commissions include the Reserve Bank, Woden Town Square and the Captain James Cook Memorial Fountain in Newcastle, to name a few. Her smaller pieces are held in the NGA and most state galleries across Australia plus a small number of private collections. Her output of smaller pieces (marquettes and stand-alone sculptures) was not large and now she is one of the most sought-after Australian sculptors.
Margel Hinder's sculpture rarely come onto the market. In the last twenty years, research has shown that only nine of Margel's sculptures have come up at auction and past auction records reveal that they were sold in 2020 (1), 2019 (1), 2018 (1), 2017 (1), 2015 (1), 2014 (2), 2011 (1) and 2006 (1). Two of the nine works were the same so that leaves only seven different sculptures for sale in twenty years through auction.
Very few galleries have works for sale by Margel Hinder but we are fortunate enough to have had Frank's works for sale since the closure of Gallery A in 1983 and Margel's since the early 1990s.
Original Sketch for Planar was exhibited as part of Margel's first dedicated retrospective exhibition titled Margel Hinder: Modern in Motion at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, in 2021. This is a travelling exhibition and is currently showing at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, until 6 February. If sold by us prior to 6 February, it is on the understanding that you won't receive your work until it is returned to us in late February.
The AGNSW exhibition went from 30 January to 2 May 2021.
The Heide MOMA exhibition is on from 30 October 2021 to 6 February 2022 (photo from the Heide exhibition shown).
The catalogue of the exhibition titled also, Margel Hinder: Modern in Motion (Lesley Harding and Denise Mimmocchi, AGNSW and Heide MOMA, 2021), features Original Sketch for Planar on p.167 and in the List of Works on p.185.
Original Sketch for Planar is a superb Margel Hinder sculpture, being the marquette for the major sculpture, Planar, now in the Macquarie University Collection. This major piece is 83.5 cm (h) x 66.5 cm (w) x 37.5 cm (d) is reproduced in The Sculpture of Margel Hinder (Ian Cornford, Enid Hawkins with Phillip Mathews Book Publishers, 2013) on pages 132-133.f
