Clarice Beckett (1887-1935) produced evocative paintings which offer a view of Australia that celebrates modernity and the quiet beauty of the city and its suburbs. Beckett's work was challenging for its time and her story as an artist who never compromised her unique vision and continued to paint 'against the odds' is compelling and inspirational while also being moving and poignant. Clarice Beckett died of pneumonia at 48 years after painting the sea during a storm.
